Ryan Murphy’s The Prom has a release date.
Murphy took to social media Sunday to announce that his new film will be available to stream on Netflix on Dec. 11.
“On DECEMBER 11, let Netflix take you to THE PROM you didn’t get this year,” he wrote alongside a photo that lists the star-studded lineup of the Broadway adaptation including Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman and Kerry Washington.
The release date comes after production on the film restarted in Los Angeles in late July to film for four consecutive days after filming halted amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. The Prom marked the second major project from the streamer to return to production in the U.S.
The film adaptation of The Prom is based on an original concept by Jack Viertel and a book by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin (Martin and Beguelin will also pen the film’s screenplay). Murphy will direct.
The Prom centers on teenager Emma who wants to bring her girlfriend to her school’s big dance. However, her hopes are crushed after the couple is banned from attending the dance together, prompting the teens’ small-town home to help fight the injustice.
When announcing the adaptation, Murphy called the Broadway musical “one of the most uplifting, heartfelt and special musicals” he’s seen grace the stage. “It’s truly an original that celebrates the underdog and says in a loving spectacular way that LGBTQ rights are human rights. I feel a special connection to it because it’s set in Indiana, and that’s where I grew up, too,” he wrote on Instagram.
The Prom marked the first movie project announced under Murphy’s groundbreaking Netflix deal.
