Netflix’s ‘Master of None’ Renewed for Second Season

Netflix’s Master of None, to no one’s surprise, is coming back for a second season.

Creator-writer-star Aziz Ansari announced the news Thursday on Twitter:

The decision to renew the comedy, produced by Universal Television, comes weeks after Ansari and his Parks and Recreation cohort/co-creator Alan Yang (who with Parks boss Mike Schur executive produces the series) told reporters at TCA that they were still “figuring out” what a sophomore season of the critical darling would look like. 

Season one of Master of None was based on Ansari’s personal and professional experiences (as well as those around him), and the star confessed he needed time to “refill” his head. 

“The first season was so personal, and I want to make sure that what ever we do for season two lives up to what we did for season one,” he said. “We’d love to do it — we’re figuring it out.”

The first season also drew from Ansari’s stand-up specials, much of which took years to craft, as well as his recent book, Modern Romance: An Investigation. “[There were] things that happened to me years ago, like the ‘Indians on TV’ [episode] — that was something that definitely happened to me when I was starting out in my career,” he noted. “Alan and I are not holding anything back.”

For Netflix, Master of None joins a rapidly growing list of originals as the streaming giant is poised to spend $5 billion on original programming in 2016. Netflix has upcoming comedies including Judd Apatow’s Love, Ashton Kutcher’s The Ranch, Fuller House, Flaked and more.
