Add another show to Fox’s growing list of renewals and throw another dollar in the douchebag jar. New Girl has been renewed for a sixth season, cementing its status as the network’s longest-running live-action comedy.
“Every network comedy should aspire to what Liz Meriwether is achieving in New Girl, with its bravura dialogue, inventive and witty performances by the talented cast and emotionally engaging storytelling,” Fox entertainment president David Madden said Tuesday in a statement. “The series is as creatively strong today as it ever was, we want to congratulate New Girl on reaching its milestone 100th episode and we can’t wait for the next subversive and hilarious chapter of these characters’ lives.”
Five seasons in, New Girl remains the highest-rated comedy on Fox’s schedule. The ensemble show, pushed to midseason this year to help accommodate star Zooey Deschanel’s pregnancy and the network’s busy freshman roster, ties Brooklyn Nine-Nine with an average 2.0 rating among adults 18-49.
The fifth season has also proved that Fox has the freedom to play around with how the comedy is aired. After staying off of the airwaves for nearly eight months, it moved into the 8 p.m. Tuesday time slot to help build the neighboring comedy block. And, with so many episodes still unaired, Fox will double up with two every Tuesday between April 19 and the May 10 finale.
Produced by 20th Century Fox Television, with Meriwether joined by Brett Baer and Dave Finkel as showrunners, a renewal for New Girl is something of a given — with many internally eyeing the series for a seven-season run. It follows fellow comedies The Last Man on Earth, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Scream Queens, as well as dramas Empire, Bones, Gotham, Rosewood and Lucifer, in securing a spot on the fall 2016 schedule.
A 22-episode order means New Girl would hit 138 episodes by the end of the seventh season.
