Two-and-a-half years after filming is one-off turn in the pilot, Damon Wayans Jr. returns to New Girl during the Nov. 5 episode.
And though the six-episode stint will see the Happy Endings alum tackling several storylines in the sitcom he briefly called home, his immediate return is all about its effects on other relationships in the loft.

“Coach coming gives Nick [Jake Johnson] and Schmidt [Max Greenfield] kind of a nice opportunity to step back in time together and be their pre-Jess [Zooey Deschanel] selves,” says executive producer Brett Baer in latest video from the Fox comedy’s writers.
The resulting surge in testosterone also throws a wrench in the current coupled bliss of Nick and Jess.
“It was important for us to demonstrate that Nick going back in time was going to have a ramification with his relationship,” adds Baer. “Nick is literally between Coach and Jess and trying to play cool single guy.”
Given the macho nature of the episode, it comes as no surprise that events ultimately move to a strip club. And though the show briefly considered a storyline where Jess tagged along, it was ultimately eighty-sixed for the B-story of Jess’ brief flirtation with guest star Taye Diggs.
“I think having Jess go to the strip club was probably just the writing staff wanting to get a lap dance,” adds Baer.
