The New York Times has found its new chief TV critic.
James Poniewozik, Time magazine’s columnist and critic, has been hired in a role formerly occupied by critic Alessandra Stanley. His start date is Sept. 8.
“Jim has been the television critic at Time for 16 years, where he has become one of the most prominent voices analyzing the modern TV revolution today,” Time culture editor Danielle Mattoon wrote in a memo. “He writes with authority, a deep love for the medium, and sentences that spark delight.”
“In seriousness, excited to be joining the NY Times in September as their TV critic. And will miss everyone at Time, which has been my home,” Poniewozik wrote on Twitter.
The critic, one of the most well-known bylines in the TV space, has contributed to Time since 1999, writing cover stories, features, award season commentary and regular blog posts about shows like Mad Men.
The hiring of Poniewozik follows a shuffle in the Times’ television ranks.
Vulture editorial director Gilbert Cruz, formerly a senior editor at Time, was hired as the paper’s television editor in February. In June, Stanley, a longtime critic at the Times, moved to a reporting role focused on inequality and the wealthiest Americans.
