The ATX Television Festival is going big for its fifth anniversary.
The annual Austin-set television festival will honor Norman Lear with its Achievement in Television eXcellence Award and feature an Everybody Loves Raymond reunion at the June 9 to 12 event.
The Shield writers’ room reunion featuring Shawn Ryan; a live script reading of Fox’s unproduced Big remake from the creators of Enlisted; as well as panels featuring Shondaland partner Betsy Beers, Bones’ Hart Hanson and Wonderfalls‘ Krista Vernoff.
“We’re humbled and honored to have the legendary Norman Lear accept our Achievement in Television eXcellence Award, which was created with the intention of acknowledging those who have dedicated their lives to television — participating in its history as well as its future — and there is no one better suited to receive that honor than Mr. Lear,” said ATX co-exec directors/founders Caitlin McFarland and Emily Gipson of the producer whose credits include Maude, Sanford and Son, Good Times, The Jeffersons and One Day at a Time, among others. “We’re also thrilled to begin announcing our programming for season five, as we strive to continue balancing our reunions, niche series, current shows and new series premieres, as well as some of the biggest hits from network, cable and streaming platforms.”
Lear joins previous recipients Henry Winkler (Happy Days) and James L. Brooks (The Simpsons).
The Everybody Loves Raymond reunion is set to feature creator Phil Rosenthal and stars Patricia Heaton, Doris Roberts and Monica Horan, as well as writers Mike Royce, Lew Schneider, Steve Skrovan, Jeremy Stevens and Aaron Shure, who will reunite to discuss the evolution of this iconic family sitcom. Additional participants will be announced later. Reunions are a staple of ATX; season four featured reunions of The Gilmore Girls, Queer as Folk and the writers of Dawson’s Creek.
The Shield writers panel will feature Ryan, Glen Mazzara, Scott Rosenbaum and Sarah Fain, with additional panelists also expected to be added. Ryan will also join creator Ted Griffin and star Michael Raymond-James for a spotlight screening and Q&A of FX’s critical hit drama Terriers, which will be part of ATX’s canceled too soon programming.
ATX season five will also feature a live script reading of Kevin Biegel and Royce’s never-produced Big reboot, with surprise cast set to participate. Vernoff will also screen her passed-over pilots Grace and Introducing Lennie Rose, with actress Abigail Spencer — who starred in both — also set to appear.
Beers and Hanson will join the festival and both participate in panels about their respective careers.
