CBS is developing a reboot of its 1990s dramedy Northern Exposure, with series star Rob Morrow and creators Joshua Brand and John Falsey attached.
The project would be a continuation of the show, which initially ran from 1990 to 1995 and won seven Emmys, including one for best drama series. It would have Morrow’s Dr. Joel Fleischman returning to Cicely, Alaska, for the funeral of an old friend and reuniting with some of his former neighbors and meeting a new set of quirky characters.
Brand is writing the script and will executive produce with Falsey, Morrow and Ben Silverman. John Corbett, who starred with Morrow on the original, is a producer.
Universal Television, which produced the original series, is also behind the reboot.
Talk of a Northern Exposure reboot has been floating around for a couple of years. Darren E. Burrows, who played Ed Chigliak on the series, has tried to crowdfund new episodes. At a reunion panel at the 2017 ATX Festival, Brand said Morrow had been working to revive the series.
“It sounds like we all want it to happen,” castmember Cynthia Geary, who played Shelly Tambo, said at the time.
The potential Northern Exposure revival joins a host of other reboot/revival projects in development across the TV landscape, ranging from Designing Women to Buffy the Vampire Slayer to The Hills. That is in addition to the myriad reboots already airing, including fellow CBS ’90s staple Murphy Brown, NBC’s Will & Grace and Netflix’s One Day at a Time, among others.
Northern Exposure‘s cast also included Barry Corbin, Janine Turner, John Cullum, Elaine Miles and the late Peg Phillips. Morrow had a reduced role in the show’s final season and departed with eight episodes to go in the run. Paul Provenza and Teri Polo joined the show as Cicely’s new doctor, Phil Capra, and his wife, Michelle, who worked for the town newspaper.
