Civility got a small win on Friday when President Barack Obama got tough with a crowd of Hillary Clinton supporters in Fayetteville, N.C., when they turned on a Donald Trump supporter who began to heckle the president as he spoke.
The president, briefly irritated, sternly told the crowd to settle down and go easy on the man, who Obama said appeared to be older and a possible veteran.
“Everybody! Hey! Listen up!” Obama said over the crowd turning on the protester. “I told you to be focused, and you’re not focused right now. Listen to what I am saying.”
He continued, “First of all, we live in a country that respects free speech. Second of all, he looks like he might have served in our military, and we have to respect that. Third of all, he was elderly, and we’ve got to respect our elders. And fourth of all, don’t boo, vote.”
The president has been stumping on behalf of Clinton for the past few weeks. Clinton’s opponent, GOP nominee Trump, has taken numerous shots at Obama, saying he needs to be governing in the White House, not hitting the road for a candidate.
