Once Upon a Time ended its fourth season with a stunning change: Emma (Jennifer Morrison), the show’s heroine, became the newest Dark One — a sacrifice made to save Regina (Lana Parrilla) and the entire town of Storybrooke.
When the ABC drama returns Sunday for season five, Emma has vanished from the town. When she pops up — in a different world — she is desperate to fight the darkness. And when Emma thinks she finally has a solid lead, she finds an unexpected roadblock: Merida (Amy Manson), whom viewers may recognize from Brave.
As illustrated in the video above, Emma — who still is struggling with her new magic — accidentally stops Merida from getting away. But Merida will not cower in fear: “My aim is true, don’t test me,” she warns.
Although Emma confesses a bit of what’s going on to her, Merida needs the bit of magic for herself and offers a solution: a fair, no-magic fight.
“If you watch the movie Brave, you realize that Merida’s problem [is] she punches first and asks questions second,” Once Upon a Time co-creator Eddy Kitsis told reporters at a recent screening. “That’s what we’re seeing here, is we’re going to find her in the middle of a very intense situation. We’re definitely going to explore her story more. … She’s going to get her own hour. We’re [going to] go to DunBroch and see the dad and the mom and everything [in flashbacks].”
Once Upon a Time returns Sunday, Sept. 27, at 8 p.m. on ABC. Are you excited to see Emma and Merida face off? Stay tuned to THR‘s Live Feed for more OUAT coverage leading up to — and after — the season premiere.
