The Onion’s first TV show is a spoof of the cable news networks (without, it seems, the burning Howard Beale-style indignation of Jon Stewart). The Onion team has produced daily Web video parodies for three years now. In addition to Onion News Network, the news parody franchise also has a Comedy Central series, The Onion SportsDome, coming the same month.
Onion News Network comes to IFC in January. That former Fox News anchor Suzanne Sena plays the show’s lead anchor “Brooke Alvarez” makes this all the more surreal. Here’s the first trailer…
IFC plans to premiere Onion News Network and another new comedy series Portlandia back-to-back on Friday, Jan. 21. The network, part of Cablevision’s Rainbow Media program unit, said Friday that the shows will debut that day in the 10pm and 10:30pm time slots, respectively. IFC previously also debuted The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret on Friday night, has been the go-to night for its comedy premieres under its “Always On. Slightly Off” slogan.
