Winfrey recently received critical acclaim and a SAG nomination for her role in Lee Daniels’ The Butler, her first film role since 1998’s Beloved. She and Sanders are working on a Broadway revival of The Color Purple, possibly for the 2014-15 season, The Times adds. ‘night, Mother was written by Marsha Norman, who wrote the book for The Color Purple musical, which Winfrey and Sanders produced in 2005.
Winfrey previously told THR that she was thinking about Broadway but trying to determine when she’d have the time.
“It’s something I would like to do, but I’d like to get settled in my house, have a life and then make the next move,” she says. “I’d just like to be in the space where I really feel like I have nothing to prove.” Is she close? “I think I’m just about there.”
