Laverne Cox‘s mission continues.
The transgender Orange Is the New Black actress has partnered with MTV and Logo on a forthcoming hourlong documentary, Trans Teen: The Documentary, that will air simultaneously on both Viacom-owned networks in the fall. With Cox hosting, the doc will take viewers inside the lives of four trans youths ranging in age from 14 to 24.
Those featured in the Cox doc hail from diverse neighborhoods across the country and will share stories of overcoming challenges including intolerance, bullying and general confusion about who and what they are. The four castmembers will let cameras in as they deal with medical, psychological and social hurdles with varying levels of parental and social support.
STORY: Jennifer Lopez, Laverne Cox Honored at GLAAD Awards
The doc adds to a growing résumé for Cox, who has been busy with speaking engagements on the topic and a second season of Orange, which is set to bow June 6 on Netflix. She was recently honored by GLAAD for her long-standing and high-profile work as an advocate for the transgender community. On that night, Cox said, “I’m an African-American transgender woman from a working-class background raised by a single mother. We are not programmed to think we should receive these kinds of awards, but I’d like to think that things are changing.”
Trans Teen is being executive produced by Cox along with Marshall Eisen and Betsy Forhan for MTV and Logo, Cheryl Horner Sirulnick for Gigantic! Productions, Michael Hirschorn for Ish Entertainment and Eric Miclette.
