‘Orange Is the New Black’ Star Joins DC’s ‘Doom Patrol’ Series

A familiar face from Orange Is the New Black is headed to DC’s forthcoming digital service.

Diane Guerrero has joined the live-action cast of the SVOD service’s Doom Patrol series. Guerrero, who has played Maritza Ramos in multiple seasons of the Netflix dramedy, will co-star in the Greg Berlanti-produced drama opposite April Bowlby.

Doom Patrol is described as a reimagining of one of DC’s most beloved group of outcast superheroes: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Woman (Bowlby) and Crazy Jane (Guerrero), who are led by modern-day mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder (The Chief). The drama picks up after the events of Titans, which is also in the works at DC Universe and produced by Berlanti. 
Doom Patrol, based on the iconic comic book characters, will be written by Jeremy Carver (Supernatural), who will executive produce the 13-episode series alongside Berlanti — the prolific exec producer behind The CW’s Arrow-verse — and Geoff Johns. 
Guerrero’s Crazy Jane is described as an unlikely hero who is suffering from the world’s most severe case of multiple personality disorder. Each one of her distinct 64 personas manifests a different super power, making Jane the Doom Patrol’s most powerful — and unstable — member.

Guerrero joins Doom Patrol after her role in CBS’ Superior Donuts and The CW’s Jane the Virgin. She has played Maritza in multiple seasons of Orange Is the New Black.

(Spoiler alert: Guerrero was among those missing from the most recent sixth season of the Netflix series as the Jenji Kohan dramedy features the transfer of multiple inmates to different prisons. Despite her season six absence, Orange tends to revisit characters later down the line, meaning the door is open for Guerrero’s return.)

Guerrero, repped by Abrams Artists Agency and Jackoway Tyerman, also penned a memoir, In the Country We Love, that details her experience with the immigration system. Her middle-grade follow-up, My Family Divided, published this month.   

DC Universe will launch in August. The casting officially confirms that the DC Universe shows will all be connected in a similar fashion to DC Entertainment’s suite of scripted originals on The CW.
