BBC AmericaTORONTO — Canada likes its clone dramas.
Denis Villeneuve‘s Enemy, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a mild-mannered history teacher chasing his doppelganger, leads the film field with 10 nominations at the Canadian Screen Awards.
And Space’s Orphan Black, a surprise hit for BBC America, where lead Tatiana Maslany plays seven look-a-like characters, grabbed a field-leading 14 nominations in the TV competition.
Orphan Black will compete for the best Canadian TV drama trophy with APTN’s Blackstone, CTV’s Motive (which also airs on ABC), CTV’s Flashpoint series, and Global Television’s Bomb Girls.
Blackstone creator, writer and director Ron E. Scott welcomed the first-time best drama nod for Blackstone, a series about power politics and corruption on a Canadian native reservation.
“This original series is broaching issues in Canada never before seen on TV,” Scott said Monday.
Villeneuve’s Enemy will contend in the best film competition against Sebastian Pilote‘s The Dismantling, Xavier Dolan‘s Tom At The Farm, Louise Archambault‘s Gabrielle, Michel Poulette‘s Maina, Don McKellar‘s The Grand Seduction, Michael Dowse‘s The F Word (starring Daniel Radcliffe), and Peter Stebbing’s Empire of Dirt.
The Canadian Screen Awards, hosted by Martin Short, will be handed out on March 9 in Toronto, and will be broadcast on the CBC.
