The Fashion Fund is making the leap from Ovation to Amazon.
The streamer has made a rare unscripted pickup and ordered 10 episodes of the docuseries, which follows the annual design competition run by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and Vogue. Conde Nast Entertainment and Break Thru Films’ Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg are producing.
The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund was created in 2003 to support emerging American designers. A group of 10 up-and-comers compete each year in the four-month competition, and a committee led by CFDA chairman Diane von Furstenberg and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour crowns the winner. The 10 finalists for this year’s competition were announced in July and the winner, who will take home $400,000 for business development, will be named Nov. 2.
The Fashion Fund originally streamed as one of Hulu’s first original series in 2012 and was resurrected by Ovation in 2014 for two seasons. Amazon’s pickup signals an expansion of the streamer’s relationship with Conde Nast Entertainment. They are currently working together on The New Yorker Presents, a news magazine series from producer Alex Gibney.
Amazon will stream the series through its Prime Instant Video, which is part of the $99 a year Amazon Prime subscription. The e-commerce giant is also planning a retail experience that will coincide with the show. Amazon Fashion will launch an online retail shop with a selection of the Spring 2016 collections from this year’s Fashion Fund candidates.
The Fashion Fund will bypass Amazon’s traditional pilot process, where it lets audiences weigh in on its development slate before making series orders.
