Netflix is offering a first look at the second season of Ozark.
The streaming service has released a trailer for the next installment of its Jason Bateman drama, which is set to return Aug. 31. The platform had renewed the series less than a month after its 2017 premiere. At the same time, onstage Sunday at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, the star teased what the upcoming season would look like.
“The writers understand that the audience wants escalation. You don’t want redundancies,” said the actor and producer, adding, “Sometimes that comes in the way of plot complication or emotional intensity.” Bateman went on to say that his wife on the show, played by Laura Linney, beings to really get on him about how emotionally repressed he is in the coming season.
Produced by Media Rights Capital, Ozark centers on financial planner Marty Byrde (Bateman) and his wife, Wendy (Linney), and their family’s sudden relocation from the suburbs of Chicago to a summer resort community in the Missouri Ozarks. Rather than the familiar skyscrapers and trading floors, the drama explores capitalism, family dynamics and survival through the eyes of (anything but) ordinary Americans.
When one member of the press brought up comparisons to Breaking Bad, Bateman noted that he was flattered by the remarks. “We feel fortunate any time we hear that,” he said, acknowledging that both shows deal with ethically challenged middle aged white men. “Of course, that show can never be touched.”
