Veteran TV director Paco Cabezas (Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, The Alienist: Angel of Darkness) has signed on to helm The Gypsy Bride, the upcoming series from ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS) and Banijay subsidiary Diagonal TV.
Cabezas has an impressive list of credits, having directed episodes of such series as The Strain, Fear The Walking Dead, and American Gods. He will lead the creative development of new show, which is based on Carmen Mola’s novel La Novia Gitana.
The crime drama is centered on Elena Blanco, homicide inspector, a homicide inspector charged with solving the so-called gypsy bride murders. Seven years ago, a man was convicted of a sadistic killing of a Romani bride-to-be. But when the victim’s sister is murdered in a similar manner — again ahead of her wedding—Blanco has to re-open the case and find out if there is a copycat killer on the loose or if the man in jail for the first murder is actually innocent.
“For years, I had been looking for a detective thriller project combining a heartfelt and from-the-streets plot with a bit of horror to apply everything I learned working on Hollywood, and The Gypsy Bride is just perfect for that,” Paco Cabezas said in a statement.
La Novia Gitana, released in 2018, was a global bestseller, with 150,000 copies sold in ten countries. Mola has turned the story into a trilogy, with the follow-ups, La Red Púrpura (Purple Net) and La Nena (The Girl).
Viacom International Studios (VIS) and Diagonal TV, Banijay’s Iberia’s fiction production company, will co-produce The Gypsy Bride series.
