It’s game on for Asylum Entertainment and Pilgrim Studios.
The two studios are teaming up for a new event docuseries titled Planet Sport that explores the impact of sports on a global scale. Each installment will focus on one universal sporting theme — e.g., glory, endurance, teamwork — and look at the diversity of competition and athletic pursuits that exist across the globe. Both archival and contemporary footage will be used, as well as testimonials of noted athletes and other sports figures who share their unique perspectives.
Asylum Entertainment president and CEO Steve Michaels and COO Jonathan Koch, Pilgrim Studios president and CEO Craig Piligian, Legendary Entertainment chairman and CEO Thomas Tull and David Michaels will all exec produce.

“Planet Sport promises to bring to life sports in a way that audiences around the world have never experienced. Using technology, visual arts and high-level storytelling, we are creating the definitive and all-encompassing sports series,” said Michaels.
Added Piligian, “This series will do for sports what series like Planet Earth did for nature — a sweeping, moving, and beautiful depiction of something that unites us all because it’s so integral to the human experience.”
For Asylum Entertainment, which was purchased by Legendary in 2013, the project is a return to its roots. Asylum got its start in sports programming with Fox Sports’ Beyond the Glory and ESPN’s 30 for 30 before expanding to scripted series (The Kennedys) as well as films (Ring of Fire).
In addition to Pilgrim Studios’ diverse portfolio of unscripted series (Ghost Hunters, Wicked Tuna and Raising Whitley, among others), the company is currently in production on the new ABC Family series Recovery Road.
