Starz is boosting its roster of scripted originals.
The premium cable network has handed out a series order to Katori Hall’s P-Valley, based on her play Pussy Valley, and confirmed its pickup of the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced hourlong Hightown, starring Monica Raymund. Each drama series will consist of eight episodes. Premiere dates for both have yet to be determined.
P-Valley was first put into development back in August 2016. The project, which takes an unapologetic look at the lives of strip club dancers working in the Dirty Delta, hails from Chernin Entertainment and stars Brandee Evans (The Bobby Brown Story) and Nicco Annan. Shannon Thornton (Power) and J. Alphonse Nicholson (Chicago PD) co-star. Hall will executive produce alongside consulting producer Khaliah Neal (The Last Black Man in San Francisco). Patrik-Ian Polk (Being Mary Jane) is a co-executive producer. Music video director Karena Evans (Drake’s “Nice for What,” SZA’s “Garden”) will helm the premiere.
Hightown, meanwhile, was rumored to have been picked up to series in September. Formerly called P-Town, the crime drama is set amid the drug trade on Cape Cod that is ignited when a body washes ashore and is discovered by an irreverent National Marine Fisheries Service officer who is determined to help solve the murder even if the state cops want her nowhere near the case. Chicago Fire grad Raymund stars in the series, which will begin production in March. Rebecca Cutter (Gotham) serves as writer and exec producer alongside Gary Lennon, Bruckheimer and JBTV’s Jonathan Littman and KristieAnne Reed. The project hails from Lionsgate TV, which retains international, domestic and home entertainment rights.
P-Valley and Hightown join a roster of Starz scripted originals that also includes Outlander, American Gods, Sweetbitter, Vida, Power and Counterpart.
