Pop is taking a page from the ‘80s.
The cable channel has ordered a modern-day aerobics comedy starring Matt Jones (Breaking Bad), Chris Diamantopoulos (Silicon Valley) and AnnaLynne McCord (90210),The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Let’s Get Physical centers on a slacker named Joe, who, with every breath he takes, makes a reluctant comeback in the fitness industry after his dad, Col. Tom Force, aka “The Godfather of Aerobics,” unexpectedly dies and his son inherits the broken-down family gym. However, to receive the family fortune and estate, Joe must take on his archnemesis, who has become a highly successful fitness entrepreneur. Against all odds, they face off in the ultimate battle of masculinity: the National Aerobics Championships.
Jones stars as Joe, the son of the fitness legend, who has acquired two decades worth of unhealthy addictions as a result of being the lead singer of South Padre Island’s third best cover band. Trapped between two lifestyles and struggling to find a balance, he must figure out if he can win his family’s fortune and protect his dad’s legacy.
Diamantopoulos plays Joe’s rival, Barry Cross, a fitness guru with a messiah complex that hurts so good. After beating Joe Force in the National Aerobics Finals, he has since formed a highly successful elitist gym chain called The Metrix. Years later, he returns to see if he can take the Force family fortune away from Joe.
McCord is set as Claudia Cross, Joe’s ex-girlfriend, and Barry’s wife. She is described as a tech-savvy businesswoman, who built the computer software that powers The Metrix. Although she plays the role of dutiful wife and brand promoter in public, in private there’s a different story.
Connor Pritchard (Workaholics) and Ben and Dan Newmark (Gigi Does It) created the series. They will exec produce with Rosey TV’s Michael Rosenberg (Hell on Wheels) and John Morayniss for eOne, which will control worldwide rights outside of the U.S.
Production on the eight-episode series starts in Halifax, Nova Scotia, next month for a 2018 debut on Pop.
“Let’s Get Physical is a contemporary self-aware comedy inspired by the aerobics fad that set fitness crazes in motion across the nation,” said Pop exec vp original programming Justin Rosenblatt. “The show features characters that are distinctive, full of heart and played by a dream ensemble cast with undeniable chemistry.”
Added Morayniss, eOne Television’s CEO: “We are thrilled to start production on this hilarious new series, which completely captures the zeitgeist of the ‘80s in all the right ways. Alongside our outstanding partners, Ben and Dan Newmark, Connor Pritchard, Michael Rosenberg and Pop, we look forward to audiences ‘getting physical’ with us next year.”
For Pop, a joint venture between CBS and Lionsgate, Let’s Get Physical joins a comedy slate that includes Schitt’s Creek, Nightcap, Hollywood Darlings, Return of the Mac and the recent debut of the Peter Stormare comedy Swedish Dicks, featuring Keanu Reeves in a recurring role.
