POP has secured its first scripted series.
The new network, which replaces TVGN in early 2015, has acquired Canadian half-hour comedy Schitt’s Creek starring veterans Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The pickup comes one month after it was formally announced that TVGN, a joint venture between Lionsgate and CBS Corp., would be getting a new identity.
Schitt’s Creek centers on ex-filthy rich video store magnate Johnny Rose (Levy), his soap star wife, Moira (O’Hara), and their two kids — hipster son David (Daniel Levy) and socialite daughter Alexis (Annie Murphy) — who suddenly find themselves broke. They relocate to Schitt’s Creek, a small and depressing town they once bought as a joke. The 13-episode Schitt’s Creek premieres simultaneously in the U.S. and Canada on POP and CBC, respectively, in early 2015.
“This show answers the question — what would the Kardashians do if they woke up one day, completely broke?” said Brad Schwartz, president entertainment and media at POP. “Not only is this project a clever cultural commentary where the 1 percent is suddenly the 99, but it fits right in the heart of everything we’re building at our new network. It’s a dream cast, it’s hysterically funny, and it’s sure to pop.”
Schitt’s Creek was originally commissioned by Canada’s CBC, produced by Not a Real Company Productions and distributed by ITV Studios Global Entertainment. Eugene and Daniel Levy created the series and serve as executive producers along with Andrew Barnsley, Fred Levy and Ben Feigin.
POP, which targets “the modern grown-up,” aims to have an aggressive slate of more than 400 hours of programming when it launches next year, eyeing a combination of syndication acquisitions (Beverly Hills, 90210; 7th Heaven), new projects and current TVGN series (Rock the Boat: New Kids on the Block, The Story Behind, Big Brother: After Dark).
