The actor dropped by The Late Late Show With James Corden on Wednesday to discuss his latest project where he divulged a plan he had while shooting the film.
“Everybody used to come to my trailer to watch movies” on the set, Key explained to Corden and fellow guest Alison Brie. “We’d only watch black exploitation movies … and The Room.”
Key went on to detail the film credits of late actor Rudy Ray Moore, who starred in a number of black exploitation movies in the 1970s, best known for his role as Dolemite. “In the second Dolemite movie, there’s a moment where he’s in bed with a white woman and the racist deputy comes and goes, ‘Mrs. Charleston?!’ and she goes, ‘He made me do it!’ So, Dolemite looks at her and goes, ‘Bitch, are you for real?'” Key said.
“Now, I was determined in the nine weeks that I shot this film to find a scene where I could get this line … in the movie,” he continued. “I figured it’s a pretty appropriate line. If you see an alien, you should be able to say, ‘Bitch, are you for real?'”
Unfortunately for Key (and audiences everywhere), the line didn’t make the final cut of the movie. Luckily, Corden had a solution and offered the actor the chance to perform the line on his show. Tossing to a clip of two Predator monsters wreaking havoc, the host set up Key to deliver his line, which he did straight to camera with an appropriately incredulous look.
Naturally, a line of such poignancy works in numerous scenarios, so Corden also showed such clips as Bruce Willis’ fate being revealed at the end of The Sixth Sense and Donald Trump talking about Hurricane Florence as “tremendously big and tremendously wet,” both of which were responded to with the requisite “Bitch, are you for real?”
