[Warning: Spoilers ahead from Tuesday’s episode, “Gamma Zeta Die.”]
Will a college visit help the Pretty Little Liars focus on something other than “A”?
Post-high school plans are on the minds of Aria (Lucy Hale), Spencer (Troian Bellisario), Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Emily (Shay Mitchell), but having “A” out of sight and out of mind can be an impossible task — something the Liars discovered on Tuesday’s episode, “Gamma Zeta Die,” when one of them gets sent to jail.
THR highlights the episode’s biggest storylines:
A surprising arrest: Hanna is so knee-deep in investigating her own mother that she basically does everything she can to get put into the slammer. After eavesdropping on a phone conversation between Ashley (Laura Leighton) and Veronica (Lesley Fera) talking about the police’s case that they’re building against her. After some freakouts over Ashley’s missing muddy shoes (maybe “A”?), Hanna discovers that her mother’s closet is oddly locked (it never is, she says). Naturally she breaks into it and what she finds in a black bag is 10 times worse than anything she could ever expect: a gun. Her desperation brings her to do the dumbest thing possible: crash Emily and Spencer’s college sorority party and bury the gun in the woods. Of course, Hanna’s plan bombs when the police discover her — with gun in hand. Off to jail you go!
Spencer’s desperation hits another level: Spencer’s mom sets up a meeting for Spencer to meet with college admissions coach Brendan McGowan, out of fear that a at Radley tarnishes her chances of going to an Ivy. After nixing a weekend visit to Brown University, at Veronica’s insistence, Spencer opts to go to a lower-tiered university, Cicero College, dragging Emily along for the ride. Why? The number that Tippy was chirping leads to a location around that area. That Spencer, always thinking. The phone number, Spencer discovers, leads to a dark, creepy panic room/bunker in a sorority house. In the tag, “A” wipes off a dusty photo highlighting “house mother” Carla Grunwald.
Emily’s college backup plan: While Spencer is not particularly interested in Cicero College, Emily takes Brendan’s advice — to “figure out a way to rebrand you” — to heart by declaring her interest in studying biology and showing some genuine interest in what Cicero has to offer. This comes after Emily’s father apologizes for not being able to send her off to dream school Stanford. And during Emily’s Cicero visit, Brendan and Emily get very close (to the point where Emily has to say she’s a lesbian).
Ella’s Europe trip that (almost) never was: Aria’s mom Ella (Holly Marie Combs) changes her mind to go to Vienna with her boyfriend Zack. Her argument is that Aria’s brother Mike (remember him?) was having trouble dealing with the long period of time that she would be gone, since he’s still in recovery, she tells Aria in the car. But Aria is suspicious. When Aria leaves, an “A” text comes in: “This is just the first taste of my venom,” in reference to the bees that swarm Ella. Yikes! Aria later confronts Mike (Cody Allen Christian) about his reasoning, and he comes back with a zinger, saying that Aria wants to be intimate with Ezra without her mother around. Ouch. So Aria tasks her dad (Chad Lowe) to persuade Ella to go overseas — mainly to protect her. There’s some hesitation on his part — understandable — but he does it anyway.
