[Warning: Spoilers ahead from season three finale, “A dAngerous gAme.”]
Pretty Little Liars wrapped up season three with a jam-packed finale.
There were resurrections, returns and shocking bombshells in the not-so-sleepy town of Rosewood, Penn., including a revelation about the identity of Red Coat — aka the girl in charge — and the “A” team members, in “A dAngerous gAme.”
Who is Red Coat?
She is (or could be) … Alison.
The moment came following a fire that put Mona, Emily, Hanna and Aria in grave danger. They found themselves being pulled out of the fiery house and into safety by a mysterious figure that turned out to be Alison (who was thought to be dead at the beginning of the series), at least according to Hanna and Mona, the only ones who saw the blonde when they awoke.

The biggest reveals from Tuesday’s episode:
The “A” team revealed: The complete “A” team was revealed throughout the episode, and, as of the end of the finale, the team members consist of — or once consisted of: Shana, Melissa, Jenna, Mona, Toby, and, to a lesser degree, Spencer.
Toby isn’t dead after all! After Spencer came across the body in the woods a few episodes back, it was assumed that Toby was dead, but that would be too easy, now wouldn’t it? When Toby gets called in to meet who he thinks is a member of the “A” team at a diner, it’s actually Spencer in a black hoodie. The anticipated moment between the two is tense and dramatic, with Toby assuring Spencer that his “teaming up” with Mona was all to “keep you safe. I need you to believe me,” he urges. Then, in an unexpected development, the former lovers rekindle their romance — or so it seems. Are they OK now?
“Ezria” is done, for now: In other news, Ezra and Aria’s romance hit a wall when Ezra discovered that he had a son — and the possibility that he could be rehired at the high school. After trying to work through it, Aria decided that it wasn’t a relationship she could continue pursuing. “I just don’t think we can ever get that back,” Aria says, referring to their pre-Malcolm glory days, to Ezra, who still wanted to make their partnership work. It also doesn’t help that Aria’s father Byron tells her that he doesn’t think it’s appropriate for them to be together if Ezra does take that job. Was it her father’s suggestion that put Aria over the edge? If not, it certainly played a part, as she tells Ezra later to take the job — effectively ending their relationship.

Spencer gets tested: It was a misdirect for the ages. When Spencer came across what she thought was Red Coat in the girls bathroom at the high school, only to see that it was Hanna, it was certainly a gasp-worthy moment. But when it was revealed that Hanna, Emily and Aria were only testing their friend to see if she was truly still with them, there were some major sighs of relief.
Notable quotables:
- “She flirts with everyone but me.” — Hanna on Shana
- “She’s everywhere and she’s nowhere.” — Mona on Red Coat (and uber-“A”)
In typical Pretty Little Liars fashion, the season ender introduced a slew of questions, including but not limited to: Is Mona with the girls now? Was that really Alison in the red coat? Are Toby and Spencer back together? What are Toby’s true motives? What is the real deal with the “A” team? How did Shana and Jenna know about Det. Wilden’s whereabouts after the accident? Who retrieved Det. Wilden’s car from the lake? What’s the story behind the hand coming up from the ground in the tag? What did the girls see in the trunk of Wilden’s car?
Pretty Little Liars returns for season four June 11 on ABC Family.
