“When it comes to the girls, nothing ever really works out in their favor.”
Uh oh. Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario admitted the harsh truth for Aria (Lucy Hale), Hanna (Ashley Benson), Emily (Shay Mitchell) and Spencer (Bellisario) on the ABC family drama, which returns for its third season Tuesday.
“It’s a very tense time for the girls and there’s a lot still riding on several different factors working out in their favor,” Bellisario tells The Hollywood Reporter at a recent set visit.
The actress talked about the introduction of what presumably could be deemed a new “A.”
“Rosewood is a twisted and dark place,” she says. “I don’t know what awful war has happened on that territory before the first settlers got there, but it’s a very haunted place and it is fraught with evil.”
“If Mona (Janel Parrish) was the first ‘A’ and torture the girls to that extent and be that pervasive and that omnipresent and that ungrabbable, then the next ‘A’ who will crop up is going to be even more terrifying and I don’t know what the girls are going to do about it,” Bellisario adds.
On a happier note: “Spoby” (Spencer and Toby) fans will be pleased — for the time being.
“They really had to beat the odds to be together and now that things have worked out in their favor,” Bellisario says, “they’re kind of going through the first experiences of ‘how do I sabotage this relationship?’ or ‘how do you sabotage this relationship?’ or ‘where do we go in this relationship?’ “
Instead, it will be an internal struggle for both Spencer and Toby to make their romance work.
“They’re working through, instead of outside obstacles, they get to finally focus on the obstacles that they have to work through together,” she reveals.
Pretty Little Liars premieres June 5 at 8 p.m. on ABC Family.
