ABC is going to school with Quinta Brunson.
The network on Tuesday handed out a pilot order for Harrity Elementary, a single-camera comedy written by, starring and exec produced by the comedian, former Buzzfeed development partner and co-star of HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show.
The workplace comedy, which landed at ABC in September following a competitive bidding process, is about a group of teachers brought together in one of the worst public schools in the country, simply because they love teaching. The teachers will rely on each other to make it through the day, and find a way to counteract the school district’s bullshit attitude toward educating children.
Brunson will star in the comedy and exec produce alongside Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker. The potential series is a co-production between Warner Bros. TV, where Harley Quinn creators Halpern and Schumacker’s Delicious Non-Sequitur Productions banner is housed, and Disney’s 20th Television. The latter studio boarded the comedy as a co-production with the pilot pickup.
Harrity Elementary reunites Brunson with Halpern and Schumacker. Brunson previously was set to star in the duo’s 2018 pilot at The CW, The End of the World as We Know It. The project, based on the book by Iva-Marie Palmer, did not move forward. The pilot also brings Brunson back to the ABC fold after she guest-starred on Single Parents.
Brunson cut through in 2014 with her series The Girl Who’s Never Been on a Nice Date took off on YouTube. Her credits include Facebook Watch’s Quinta vs. Everything and Netflix’s Big Mouth.
For Halpern and Schumacker, should Harrity Elementary go to series, it would mark the Powerless grads’ second show and join DC Universe-turned-HBO Max animated breakout Harley Quinn.
Harrity Elementary is ABC’s seventh comedy in the works for the 2021-22 broadcast season. It joins the straight-to-series untitled comedy starring Alec Baldwin and Kelsey Grammer as well as an update of The Wonder Years from Lee Daniels. Brunson is repped by ICM Partners, Authentic Talent and Literary Management and Del Shaw.
