Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series Ratched shot to the top of the streaming charts in its first weekend.
The drama, a prequel to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest focused on nurse Mildred Ratched (Sarah Paulson), edged past Cobra Kai to take over the top spot in Nielsen’s streaming top 10 for Sept. 14-20. Netflix users watched 972 million minutes of the eight-episode series, to 964 million for Cobra Kai.
Netflix and other streamers have said Nielsen measurement doesn’t capture the full scope of their audiences, as Nielsen only covers the United States and its rankings don’t include streaming on devices other than TV sets. However, Netflix noted Friday that by its own metrics — which counts two minutes spent with a show or movie as a “view” — 48 million member accounts had turned Ratched on during its first four weeks of release. That’s the biggest original scripted series launch of the year for the company.
Amazon’s The Boys remained in the top 10 for a third consecutive week, though it slipped a spot from fourth to fifth. The remainder of the top 10 were all repeat performers, with Netflix’s Away and Lucifer the only other original shows. The week of Sept. 14 was also the first time since Nielsen began releasing its weekly streaming top 10 seven weeks ago that no show cracked a billion minutes of viewing.
