In the battle of freshman scripted summer premieres, swingers trumped slashers as the debut of CBS’ period drama “Swingtown” won the 10 p.m. hour Thursday night against NBC’s horror anthology “Fear Itself.” Yet neither show demonstrated breakout numbers in the face of ABC’s presentation of the NBA Finals.
“Swingtown” (8.6 million viewers, 2.7 preliminary adults 18 to 49 rating and an 8 share) came in second place in the10 p.m. hour and “Fear Itself” (5.2million, 2.0/6) was third. Both shows had the same lead-in rating of 2.3 (from a “CSI”repeat and an original “Last Comic Standing,” respectively). By comparison, NBC’sdrama series last summer “Windfall” debuted to a 3.4 rating.
Part of the problem was that both shows premiered opposite Game 1 of the NBA Finals featuring the Los Angeles Lakers vs.the Boston Celtics (10 million, 4.0/12).
ABC easily won the night with the game and was up 8%from last year’s first round match between the San Antonio Spurs and Cleveland Cavaliers.Plus, ABC predicts the number will rise in the nationals since post-primetimeEastern and Central viewing are not yet factored into the program’s rating.
The win meant Fox shifted to second place this week, with “SoYou Think You Can Dance” (9.1 million, 3.3/10) taking an 8% hit.
