The Philippines comes to a halt whenever Manny Pacquiao enters the ring, but in a country of chronic power shortages, residents on one of the major islands have been urged to switch off unnecessary electrical appliances to make sure there’s no blackout during Saturday’s superfight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., the BBC reports.
The island of Palawan is particularly prone to daily power outages, so the secretary of the electrical co-op on the island, Rante Ramos, took to Facebook to plead with his fellow islanders to save all the power for the television coverage of the fight.
Ramos said that some power circuits on the island “may inevitably be switched off” during the fight. He added: “On 3 May, let’s all voluntarily switch off or disconnect as many appliances as we could. Everybody could have the chance to watch live the fight of the century.”
