There’s a lot to look forward to on The Affair this season.
In a new trailer released for the third installment of the Showtime drama, the relationships between the four main characters of the series — played by Dominic West, Ruth Wilson, Maura Tierney and Joshua Jackson — grow even more complicated.
The third season picks up three years after Noah’s (West) admission of guilt at the murder trial of Cole’s (Jackson) brother, Scotty Lockhart. We learned in the clip below that he is now serving time in jail for committing the crime that his ex-wife, Helen (Tierney), is actually guilty of.
When, in the trailer, Helen insists that Noah isn’t necessarily guilty just because he’s been convicted, her daughter Whitney (Julia Goldani Telles) shoots back, “Mom, for God’s sake, the only person who didn’t think he did it is you.”

The clip also reveals that Noah gets out of prison after three years — but when the author attempts to restart his life, he finds that the damage wrought by his past decisions make him a ghost of his former self.
Meanwhile, Alison (Wilson), who continues to be haunted by the loss of her first child, is now fighting for the custody of her daughter Joanie — whose father is Alison’s ex-husband Cole (Jackson). He’s since moved on and has married Luisa (Catalina Sandino Moreno).
And for Helen, below the surface of her successful business and bustling home lies uncertainty with her boyfriend, Vic (Omar Metwally), instability among her children and an unshakable feeling of guilt.
This season will also see Irene Jacob, who makes her debut in the trailer, join the cast as a new love interest for Noah named Juliette Le Gall, a woman who is running from her own secrets and helps Noah process trauma from his past.
The Affair returns to Showtime on Nov. 20.
