It’s now more obvious than ever that David Brent is the bizarro Ricky Gervais.
The ignorant and consistently offensive goof that the British comedian played in his breakthrough BBC sitcom, The Office, has largely been MIA for the last decade, save for two brief appearances in the American version of the show several years ago. And so 10 years after the original program went off the air, Brent has returned in a bit for Britain’s Comic Relief charity show, and the subsequent launch of Gervais’ YouTube channel.
The painfully awkward (and, somewhere, well-meaning) manager was fired from his job as the manager of the Wernham Hogg Paper Company when the series ended, and during the past 10 years, he’s been kicking around, selling bathroom products to support his various music, books and podcast endeavors — all massive illusions or failures, of course.
At the same time, real-world Gervais has become an even bigger star since The Office ended, with his sitcom Extras, his podcast, reality series An Idiot Abroad and scripted efforts Life’s Too Short and the upcoming Derek, which will debut on Netflix in the United States after a successful British run.
Now, he’s adding a channel of original web content to his portfolio, which includes the spoof video for the racially-unaware Brent and his “protege,” Dom Johnson. Watch, and cringe.
