Rob Lowe’s TV roles remain as eclectic as ever. The prolific actor, most recently seen on the second season of CBS medical drama Code Black, has now boarded his own unscripted vehicle.
A&E has given a nine-episode series order to The Lowe Files, a docuseries that will follow Lowe and his two sons, Matthew and John Owen, around the country in search of various unsolved mysteries and folklore. Each episode will find the trio diving into a different story, blending the innate humor of the scenario with actual scientific investigations and expert interviews.
“Since I was a kid, I’ve loved unexplained legends, strange phenomena and the scary, supernatural stories told around campfires,” Lowe said Monday in a statement. “When I became a father, I shared those tales with my two sons. Together we bonded over Bigfoot, UFOs and every creepy and bizarre story we could find, passionately debating if they were real … or not. And we swore that someday the three of us would go on our own adventure to find out. That day has come.”

Subjects being tackled are “an alien base located 2,000 feet underwater off the coast of Malibu,” a purportedly haunted boys reformatory and training with government operatives on matters of surveillance.
“Watching Rob, Matthew and John Owen take this awesome adventure together, something that has long been a part of their family narrative, is the kind of organic programming that our viewers respond to best,” said A&E executive vp and head of programming Elaine Frontain Bryant. “Their explorations will certainly lead them to dynamic and exciting places, but a nostalgic journey for a father and his sons is what’s at the heart of the series’ underlying mission.”
Critical Content is producing The Lowe Files, with Tom Forman, Jon Beyer, Brad Bishop, Douglas McCallie, Amy Savitsky and Devon Hammonds joining Lowe and Frontain Bryant as executive producers.
Lowe is repped by WME.
