Rosario Dawson is returning to the small screen.
The actress, who most recently appeared in Netflix’s suite of Marvel dramas, has been tapped to topline USA Network’s drama pilot Briarpatch.
From Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, Briarpatch is based on the Ross Thomas novel of the same name. The drama follows Allegra “Pick” Dill (Dawson), a tenacious and highly skilled investigator working in Washington, D.C., for a young, ambitious senator. When her 10-years-younger sister, a homicide detective, is killed by a car bomb, Allegra returns to her corrupt Texas hometown. What begins as a search for the murderer becomes a fraught and dangerous excavation of the past Allegra has long sought to bury. Dawson will also be credited as a producer.
Andy Greenwald penned the script and will exec produce alongside Esmail through his production company Esmail Corp. and Anonymous Content’s Chad Hamilton. The drama, from Universal Cable Productions — where Esmail is under an overall deal — and Paramount Television, is a mix of crime, thriller, mystery and pulp fiction.
Dawson is fresh off a broadcast pilot season where she received multiple offers, passing on all of them. Her most recent TV roles have been in Netflix dramas Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and The Defenders. On the feature side, her credits include Rent, Sin City, Men in Black II, Kids, Krystal and The Lego Batman Movie. She is repped by CAA, Untitled Entertainment and the Lede Co.
