Samantha Bee has been covering Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination exhaustively in the past few months, so it didn’t come as much of a surprise when she responded to his Senate Judiciary Committee testimony on Friday, even though she broadcasts on Wednesdays.
In a video tweeted Friday, the Full Frontal host reacts to the testimonies of Kavanaugh and accuser Christine Blasey Ford while swaddled in a robe, surrounded by empty and half-empty bottles and liquor and a half-eaten cake on her lap. “I don’t have a show tonight but yesterday a bunch of super-powerful white dudes stood up and yelled at rape survivors for messing up their schedules, so I needed to either yell into a camera or eat an entire confetti cake. Honestly, I choose both.”
Bee described the hearings as “a bunch of shriveled old scrotums told the world that any Ivy League chode’s career ambitions are worth more than all the women he may have hurt on his way there.”
During his testimony, Kavanaugh called the allegations against him a “calculated and orchestrated political hit” and said the opposition to his confirmation was a “national disgrace.” Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham also gave a viral, harshly worded speech in favor of Kavanaugh and slamming Democrats for sitting on the allegations: “I hope the American people can see through this sham,” he said.
“This is one of the most heartbreaking days I’ve experienced since doing the show,” Bee said. “It’s right up there with election night and the day we learned about children separated a the border and the day that Hillary Clinton told us that, no, she would not play Pikachu in our ‘Pokemon Go to the Polls’ sketch.”
Acknowledging that Friday would be a difficult day for people disturbed by the widely watched hearings, Bee told viewers to be kind to themselves, especially if they were survivors of abuse or assault. To cheer viewers up, Bee listed off a few things that have been “giving her joy” including the “exquisite rage contouring on Alyssa Milano’s face,” as the actress was present at the hearings, meeting new dogs and her life-sized cardboard cutout of Lindsey Graham (which Bee promptly threw a tomato at and knocked over).
Finally, she thanked survivors of abuse and assault who shared their stories and the women who shouted at Sen. Jeff Flake on Friday.
