Sarah Cooper’s hot streak continues.
Following a highly competitive process, with multiple networks bidding, the TikTok breakout’s second book, How to Be Successful Without Hurting Men’s Feelings, is in development at CBS. The network has handed out a script plus penalty commitment for the single-camera comedy, which will be co-written by Cooper and Cindy Chupack (Modern Family, I’m Dying Up Here, Divorce).
Inspired by Cooper’s 2018 book, the comedy revolves around three women at different stages in their careers at a male-dominated company who help each other navigate modern gender politics in their careers and in their personal lives.
The comedy hails from PatMa Productions, fronted by former CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler, Denise Di Novi and Joan Boorstein. Chupack will serve as showrunner and exec produce alongside Tassler, Di Novi, Boorstein and Cooper.
“I was so excited when PatMa approached me about my book,” Cooper said. “I met with Cindy soon after and we immediately connected to this idea of sharing the experiences of women in their careers and personal lives in a way that stays true to what people love about the book but brings them to life through characters people will identify with. Cindy totally got the sensibility and the satire but she also has the experience of telling compelling stories. I am thrilled to be working with her on this.”
Added Chupack: “Sarah is a perfect example of ‘preparation meets opportunity.’ Her Trump lip-synchs fed a laugh-starved nation, but even before she was a household name, she wrote books that showcased her keen eye for the absurd. I’m thrilled to be collaborating with her to adapt How to Be Successful Without Hurting Men’s Feelings into a fresh, funny, subversive comedy about modern sexual politics.”
Cooper became a quarantine breakout on social media for her TikTok for her Trump lip-synchs, including her viral “How to Medical” video. Cooper recently signed with WME for representation and, since her first video went viral in April, has drawn interest from studios, streamers, production companies and publishers all with offers in a variety of genres, including features, scripted and unscripted TV, podcasts and books. The CBS development deal comes a mere eight days after Cooper landed a Netflix variety special, titled Sarah Cooper: Everything’s Fine.
The special will feature vignettes focusing on issues related to politics, race, gender, class and other topics. An array of short interviews and sketches featuring special guests will also be part of the special. The one-off will premiere at a date to be determined in the fall and is being directed by Natasha Lyonne (Netflix’s Russian Doll, Orange Is the New Black), who exec produces alongside Maya Rudolph and Danielle Renfrew Behrens. Paula Pell, AGI Entertainment’s Chris Burns (Cooper’s manager) and Dan Powell of Irony Point will also be credited as EPs.
Cooper is repped by WME, AGI Entertainment and Management, David Black Agency and Morris Yorn. Chupack is with UTA, Lighthouse Management and Ziffren Brittenham.
