‘Scandal’s’ Joe Morton to Co-Star in CBS’ ‘God Friended Me’

Scandal Emmy winner Joe Morton has booked his follow-up role.

The actor has been tapped to co-star in CBS drama pilot God Friended Me.

Questions of faith, existence and science are explored in what is described as a humorous, uplifting drama about an outspoken atheist (Brandon Micheal Hall, The Mayor) whose life is turned upside down when he is “friended” by God on Facebook. Unwittingly, he becomes an agent of change in the lives and destinies of others around him.

Morton will take on the role of Rev. Arthur Finer, a thoughtful and intelligent man who is the father to Miles (Hall) and has been the reverend of Trinity Church for the past 25 years. Although he doesn’t agree with his son’s strong rejection of his faith, he wants him back in his life.

Morton is currently wrapping the final season of ABC’s Scandal, where he won a guest actor in a drama series Emmy for his role as Rowan Pope, the villianous father to Kerry Washington’s Olivia Pope. His credits include Terminator 2, Speed 2 and Broadway’s Hair and Raisin. He’s repped by Talentworks and Vanguard Management Group.

Morton becomes the second Scandal star to book a pilot; Scott Foley (Jake) is the lead in ABC action dramedy Whiskey Cavalier, which he also produces.

God Friended Me was written by Alcatraz duo Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt. They exec produce alongside Greg Berlanti and his Berlanti Productions topper Sarah Schechter. Marcos Siega will exec produce and direct the pilot. Hall, Suraj Sharma and Javicia Leslie round out the cast.
