Ahead of its season three return, the Disney-owned cable network has handed out an additional 10-episode pickup.
The news, announced Saturday at New York Comic-Con, coincided with news of its third-season return — set for Tuesday, April 3, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The back-half of season three will air in summer 2018.
The TV series take on The Mortal Instruments feature franchise also announced that Javier Muñoz (Hamilton) and Anna Hopkins (Arrow) will also join the cast. Hopkins will portray new villain Lilith, while Muñoz will play rival warlock Magnus Bane.
Shadowhunters was picked up straight to series and changed showrunners after season one. Former Smallville showrunners Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer replaced Ed Decter, who developed the series for Freeform.
The drama is produced by Constantin Film. Based on the best-selling young adult fantasy book series by Cassandra Clare, Katherine McNamara stars as Clary Fray, a woman who finds out on her 18th birthday that she is not who she thinks she is, but rather comes from a long line of Shadowhunters — human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. Dominic Sherwood, Alberto Rosende, Matthew Daddario, Emeraude Toubia, Isaiah Mustafa and Harry Shum Jr. also star.
The Shadowhunters order comes days after Freeform picked up summer breakout The Bold Type for a two-season, 20-episode order (with a new showrunner). Both shows join a list of scripted originals that includes The Fosters, Beyond and Famous in Love as well as Young & Hungry and upcoming additions Cloak and Dagger, New Warriors, The Siren and Black-ish spinoff Grown-ish, as the Tom Ascheim-led network courts the hard-to-reach millennial viewer.
