The MTV Video Music Awards featured a special preview of MTV’s upcoming TV series The Shannara Chronicles. The fantasy epic, based on the books by Terry Brooks, is set to debut in January 2016.
The first season will pick up with the second book in the series, The Elfstones of Shannara, which follows an Elvin princess, a human rover and a half-human, half-elf character who journey to save their world from a demon army. Austin Butler (Switched at Birth), John Rhys-Davies (The Lord of the Rings) and Ivana Baquero (Pan’s Labyrinth) will star.

Spider-Man 2 and Smallville co-writers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have teamed up again to be the show’s executive producers and showrunners. At Comic-Con, Gough said that the show is “akin to Star Wars.”
