Like everything else, even the Sharknados are tougher in New York.
PHOTOS: The 15 Most Insane Animal Attack Movies
SyFy has released a new trailer and featurette for the animal-attack sequel, Sharknado 2: The Second One. “They’re sharks, they’re scary, no one wants to get eaten,” says Ian Ziering to a defeated crowd. “But I’ve been eaten, and I’m here to tell you, it takes a lot more than that to bring a good man down, a lot more than that to bring a New Yorker down!”
Sharknado 2 centers on a freak weather system that turns its deadly fury on New York City, unleashing a “sharknado” on the city’s population and its most iconic sites.
The new trailer begins with a meta approach, as the voiceover narrates, “In every generation, there’s a cinematic event that changes everything, a phenomenon that challenges the social norm, a spectacle that brings people together while taking the world by storm.” The voiceover then breaks up the epic feel of the trailer by poking fun at the project: “They say lightning never strikes twice— ah, f— it, who are we kidding?”
LIST The Hollywood Reporter Reveals Hollywood’s 100 Favorite Films
For those who didn’t tune into the original Sharknado, the “Sumnado of Sharknado” featurette — narrated by a voiceover with an accent and a sarcastic sense of humor — notes that the original film started off with “a wannabe Mafioso subplot that has nothing to do with the rest of the movie, but who cares,” and how “the sharks start enjoying the beach like it’s Sunday dinner.” It also introduces the characters and replays “the grandest scene in movie history,” in which Ziering frees himself from a shark with a chainsaw.
The sequel reunites Ziering and Tara Reid, who are joined by Vivica A. Fox, Mark McGrath, Judah Friedlander, Kelly Osbourne, Andy Dick, Judd Hirsch, Robert Klein, Kurt Angle, Benjy Bronk and Billy Ray Cyrus. Others making cameos include Al Roker, Matt Lauer, Biz Markie, Kelly Oxford, Sandra “Pepa” Denton and Perez Hilton.
The second installment of the Syfy shark films (a third has been announced) will premiere during Sharknado Week, which will run from July 26 to Aug. 2 and feature what the cable network says are the “greatest moments in shark film history.” Additionally, an app inspired by the cult B-movie will be released to coincide with the franchise’s return to the cable network.
