A shakeup in Canadian TV continues with news Tara Ellis has left Shaw Media as long-time senior director original drama content.
The Toronto-based broadcaster on Monday gave no reason for her sudden departure two weeks ago. Ellis oversaw original scripted drama and comedy for Shaw Media’s Global Television network and cable channels like Showcase and History Channel.
In her place, Rachel Nelson has been promoted to director of drama content and Lisa Godfrey has been named head of original content, overseeing programming at Shaw Media.
Ellis’ TV credits include Rookie Blue, a partnership between Global and ABC, and Working The Engels, the Andrea Martin-starring sitcom that was picked up straight to series by NBC and Global and cancelled after one season. Her exit follows Kevin Crull, CEO of rival Bell Media, three weeks ago losing his job at Canada’s top-rated TV network shortly after he apologized for barring top Canadian TV regulator Jean-Pierre Blais from his airwaves over a regulatory decision.
There’s also a vacancy at the top at Rogers Media, where Keith Pelley two weeks ago announced he will leave his post as CEO to become the new commissioner and CEO of the PGA’s European Tour. Ellis’ exit at Shaw Media comes ahead of top Canadian broadcasters, including Shaw Media, getting set for their annual shopping expedition for rookie and returning U.S. series later this month at the Los Angeles Screenings.
