Netflix’s untitled family drama has found its matriarch.
Sissy Spacek has been tapped to star in Netflix’s untitled family thriller from the creators of Damages, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The 13-episode series — produced by Sony Pictures Television — hails from Todd A. Kessler, Daniel Zelman and Glenn Kessler (aka KZK). The series centers on a family of adult siblings whose secrets and scars come to light with the return of their black-sheep brother (The Dark Knight Rises’ Ben Mendelsohn).
The casting marks Spacek’s first series television role. The Oscar winner (Coal Miner’s Daughter) is a three-time Emmy nominee, having earned nods for her guest role on HBO’s Big Love as well as supporting actress in a miniseries or movie for Fitzgerald and The Good Old Boys. She’s also been nominated for five other Academy Awards for features In the Bedroom, Crimes of the Heart, The River, Missing and Carrie.
The casting marks the latest “get” for Netflix and comes as big-screen stars continue to flock to television, lured by richer scripts and shorter production timelines that come with more limited series runs that have become increasingly popular as broadcasters continue to compete with cable and streaming services.
Spacek is repped by Innovative and The Schiff Co.
