Pan-European pay TV giant Sky on Thursday is launching its flagship entertainment channel Sky 1 in Germany and Austria.
It will offer dramas from HBO and Showtime, as well as local and European Sky programs.
The network joins Sky Atlantic HD, Sky Arts HD, the Sky Kids app and more “to further enhance the compelling entertainment portfolio we’ve now built in Germany,” the company said.
Sky 1 in Germany will launch in the evening with the first episode of a local version of international hit cooking show MasterChef, produced exclusively for the channel.
Other programming highlights of the first month include The Tunnel: Sabotage, Hooten & The Lady and Madam Secretary. Sky 1 will also show exclusive German premieres, such as Victoria, Medici: Masters of Florence and 24: Legacy, starting later in the year.
Said Elke Walthelm, executive vp, content at Sky Deutschland: “Sky 1 is our new flagship channel for outstanding entertainment programming. Customers will have access to popular brand new series and shows that the entire family will enjoy, as well as shows on demand. We are kicking this off with Sky Original production MasterChef, a show with a proven winning format.”
21st Century Fox owns a 39 percent stake in Sky, which also operates in the U.K., Ireland and Italy.
