Sky Living has ordered a British-Asian reality soap from Buccaneer Media, the U.K.-based joint venture with Canadian producer Cineflix.
The new show, called Desi Rascals, will be executive produced by Bend It Like Beckham’s Gurinder Chadha, Buccaneer Media head Tony Wood, the co-creator of The Only Way Is Essex, and Ross McCarthy. Sky Living ordered 12 episodes of the one-hour unscripted drama, which will follow the lives of a multigenerational cast in the British-Asian community.
The series will be shot in real time, using social networks to allow castmembers to interact with Sky Living viewers as their lives unfold onscreen. “I’ve been wanting for a long time to create a show which allowed me to show the British-Asian community in a truly three-dimensional way, exploring the relationships between generations and what it means to be British and Asian as values become fluid,” Chadha said in a statement.
Wood, a veteran U.K. soap producer (Coronation Street, Hollyoaks) last year partnered with Cineflix to launch his own production shingle, Buccaneer Media. Desi Rascals, produced by Buccaneer and Bend It TV, will debut in 2015, with international distribution to be handled by Sky Vision.
Sept. 11 8:15 a.m. Gurinder Chadha is not directing Des Rascals, as suggested in an earlier version of the story.
