Months and millions in marketing dollars later, NBC’s Smash officially unspooled Monday night, showcasing seven songs in the drama starring Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty as actresses both vying to portray Marilyn Monroe.
The making of a Broadway play as told from an insiders’ point of view counts theater veterans — and Tony winners — Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman among its nine executive producers as they oversee the original music in each episode. The duo craft the songs based on what the story needs to accomplish for the musical as well as the characters at the heart of Smash.

So now that you’ve seen Monday’s premiere, which of the three Broadway-caliber original songs did you think worked best?
1. “Never Give All the Heart,” as performed by Hilty’s Ivy Lynn recording a demo track for Tom (Christian Borle) and Julia (Debra Messing) as they ponder actually attempting the Marilyn musical.
2. “The National Pastime,” featuring Ivy and the audition dancers in an epic baseball performance that offers a first look at what the Marilyn musical would look like with Ivy at its star.

3. “Let Me Be Your Star” featuring McPhee’s Karen Cartwright and Ivy as they battle one another and each look toward a bright future of working with womanizing yet talented director Derek (Jack Davenport).
