The Frankie Shaw comedy, only four episodes into its first season, has been renewed for a second season. The news comes after a largely positive reception from critics and some rather exceptional freshman ratings by the pay cable network’s standards. SMILF has been averaging 4.4 million viewers per episode across platforms, making it Showtime’s most successful launch since the drama Billions.
“From its first episode, the refreshingly honest point of view of SMILF broke through with audiences, the press and on social media,” Showtime Networks programming president Gary Levine said Wednesday in a statement. “Frankie Shaw is a creative force to be reckoned with and we love having her on Showtime. Her show is funny and forthright, pointed and poignant, irreverent and relevant, all at once. We can’t wait to see where Frankie takes SMILF next season.”
Shaw, SMILF‘s creator and star, translated the series from a Sundance favorite short she made back in 2015. Prior to the show, she was best known for gigs on Good Girls Revolt and Mr. Robot. Shaw is joined on the ABC Signature Studios production by Rosie O’Donnell, Connie Britton, Miguel Gomez and Samara Weaving.
SMILF marks a rare half-hour entry for Showtime. Word is still out on fellow freshman White Famous, which premiered in October to smaller ratings returns.
SMILF‘s first season will continue to air on Sunday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT through Dec. 31.
