This weekend’s episode of NBC’s Saturday Night Live tackled the very recent news of Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court, finalized just hours before the episode aired. Kavanaugh’s confirmation by the Senate on Saturday came after a weeklong FBI investigation into the sexual assault allegations made against him.
The cold open took place in a locker room of Republican senators, who were all celebrating the Kavanaugh confirmation as if it were a sports victory. “Everyone is pumped! From white men over 60 to white men over 70!” Beck Bennett’s Sen. Mitch McConnell declared.
Kate McKinnon reprised her impression of Sen. Lindsey Graham. “We made a lot of women real worried today, but I’m not getting pregnant, so I don’t care,” McKinnon’s Graham said before handing out a “Kavanaugh world champion” hat. As the skit went on, the Graham character threw a pie at Sen. Jeff Flake, played by Pete Davidson.
Cecily Strong appeared as Sen. Susan Collins: “Listen, I think it’s important to believe women until it’s time to stop,” she said. There was also a quick reference to the news that Barack Obama’s former national security adviser Susan Rice might run to unseat her. And Aidy Bryant reprised her impression of prosecutor Rachel Mitchell, whom the Republicans tasked with asking Dr. Christine Blasey Ford questions during her hearing.
The Republicans all toasted with beers at the end of the cold open, a reference to how many times Kavanaugh mentioned he loved beer during his hearing. McKinnon’s Graham called Kavanaugh “the Natty Light” of judges.
