The Turner-owned cable network on Wednesday handed out a series order for the reboot from showrunner Josh Friedman (Avatar 4, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles). A premiere date and episode count have yet to be determined.
Hamilton Tony winner Daveed Diggs stars in the reboot alongside Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind). Based on the 2013 film starring Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton, Snowpiercer is set seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland, and centers on the remnants of humanity, who inhabit a gigantic, perpetually moving train that circles the globe. The series explores class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival.
Snowpiercer is a co-production of Tomorrow Studios and Turner’s Studio T, along with CJ Entertainment. Scott Derrickson directed the pilot, which was written by Friedman. Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein (Prison Break) and Becky Clements (TNT’s Good Behavior) and the original film’s Bong Joon-ho, Park Chan-wook, Lee Tae-hun and Dooho Choi executive produce.
“I’m a personal fan of Bong Joon-ho’s epic film and jumped at the chance to honor his original vision, yet expand upon the world and characters with a diverse, award-winning cast,” said Sarah Aubrey, executive vp original programming at TNT. “Science fiction is the perfect genre to examine issues of race, class, gender and natural resources with thought-provoking and exciting storytelling. Snowpiercer will explore those relevant issues while embarking on a wild, action-filled ride.”
Added Tomorrow Studios CEO Adelstein: “Given the exceptional global appeal of the original film, we have a tremendous obligation to ensure the TV adaptation is exceptional in scope and magnitude. We have found that with TNT and with our talented cast. Now we are excited to work together in creating a world unlike any other on television.”
Snowpiercer joins a roster of scripted dramas at TNT that includes the Animal Kingdom reboot, Claws, Good Behavior, The Last Ship, The Librarians as well as the upcoming The Alienist and One Day She’ll Darken, from Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins and starring Chris Pine. The pickup comes as TNT on Tuesday wrapped up its long-running procedural Major Crimes as network topper Kevin Reilly turns his attention to rebuilding the drama-focused cable network with edgier and more premium content. TNT’s pilot slate now consists of Deadlier Than the Male, which is awaiting word on its future.
