DreamWorks Animation Television’s new series Spirit: Riding Free hits Netflix on May 5, and The Hollywood Reporter has the exclusive first look at the trailer.
The animated series focuses on a group of three friends who experience coming-of-age and the power of friendship together. Lucky (Amber Frank), a gutsy 12-year-old, moves from the city to a frontier town and befriends a wild horse named Spirit. She and her two best friends (and their horses) explore the world to discover what it truly means to be free.
Inspired by the Oscar-nominated film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, the Netflix series tells a spinoff story involving Spirit, a wild stallion. In 2002, the animated film shared the journey of Spirit (previously voiced by Matt Damon) as he is captured by humans and slowly loses the will to resist training. He struggles through freedom and refuses to let go of the hope to one day return to his home.
From fitting in and finding a place to figuring out who you are, the episodes touch upon the emotional realities of growing up. Some of the stories also are told from the horse’s point of view.
Frank voices the lead character, Lucky, in the animated series. She is known for her work as Taylor Hathaway on the Nickelodeon TV show The Haunted Hathaways. Most recently, Frank was seen in Vanished: Left Behind – The Next Generation.
Sydney Park and Bailey Gambertoglio voice the roles of Lucky’s best friends, Pru and Abigail.
Aury Wallington is showrunner/executive producer, while Jim Schumann is co-executive producer.
