Stana Katic is returning to Amazon.
The streamer-retailer has picked up a second season of Absentia, the cop drama starring and exec produced by Stana Katic in the actress’ first TV gig after her long run on ABC’s Castle.
The series was originally commissioned for AXN, the Sony Pictures Television-owned premium cable/satellite and cable network. Amazon, which secured U.S. rights to the series in a licensing deal with Sony, has now acquired the series for first-run distribution in the U.S. and select global markets.
“Absentia really resonated with our Prime Video audience, who were enthralled by the thrilling storyline and complicated characters,” said Vernon Sanders, co-head of television at Amazon Studios. “Stana Katic is immensely talented, and we look forward to her peeling away the layers of a twisted conspiracy that is deeper than her character, Emily, could have ever imagined in season two.”
Season two of the series is currently in production in Sofia, Bulgaria. The drama is produced by Masha Productions and distributed by Sony TV. Matthew Le Nevez (The Widow) and Natasha Little (The Night Manager) join as new regulars for season two. Patrick Heusinger will also return as Katic’s onscreen ex.
“From its inception on Sony’s international networks, Absentia has been a hit with global audiences,” said Marie Jacobson, exec vp programming and production at Sony Pictures Television Networks. “We’re thrilled to push our story forward into season two and couldn’t ask for a better home than Amazon for our signature Sony Networks series.”
Oded Ruskin, Julie Glucksman, Katic and Maria Feldman exec produce the series, which was created by Gaia Violo and Matt Cirulnick.
