The Star Wars Rebels journey is coming to an end.
The Disney XD animated series’ upcoming fourth season will be its last, the Rebels team announced Saturday at Star Wars Celebration, where they also debuted a new trailer. No premiere date has been set, but it is expected for the fall.
The series has grown and expand the Star Wars universe in ways that made it a fan-favorite show, and the crowd at Star Wars Celebration greeted executive producer Dave Filoni with thunderous applause. He sported a shirt reading “Ashoka Lives?” — a reference to the apprentice of Anakin Skywalker, whose return was left uncertain.
It was readily apparent at the Star Wars Rebels panel was that Filoni and his cast have never seen themselves as simply “making a kids show.” Filoni clearly approaches the series from the perspective that it’s canonical and that he holds the power to tell stories integral to the entire Star Wars universe. Freddie Prinze Jr. (Kanan Jarrus) too, described Star Wars as being incredibly adult, even at it’s made for kids. The moment that left the most indelible mark on him as a child, was Obi-Wan’s death in the 1977 original film.
“He got got, and that felt real,” Prinze said.
And it’s that enthusiasm and respect that sent the crowd into a frenzy when Filoni said, “This is by no means the end of what we’re doing in animation.”
Characters the panelists confirmed would appear in the show’s final season include Mon Mothma and Saw Gerrera. Star Wars royalty Warwick Davis will voice a character, while Tiya Sircar (Sabine) teased a possible Boba Fett appearance.
“If there are any Mandalorian fans out there … there are a couple episodes that you may really enjoy … and you might be surprised who shows up,” she said, referencing the origin world of Fett’s armor.
Taylor Gray (Ezra) suggested maybe his character won’t go to the Dark Side after all, as some have guessed: “I think Ezra makes some great decision through season four.”
The cast got emotional as they announced it was the final season, before showing the trailer.
Though audiences are still in the dark over where Lucasfilm plans to go next on the small screen, it was quite clear from Filoni’s clothing where he’d like to go. During the panel, his shirt changed from reading “Ashoka Lives?” to reading “Ashoka Lives!”
